Manchester City's Champions League dreams were dealt a crushing blow as Real Madrid stunned them 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night. The visitors' victory gives them a 3-4 aggregate lead heading into the second leg next week.
Despite dominating possession and creating more chances, City failed to find the back of the net. Karim Benzema's second-half header proved to be the decisive blow, condemning Pep Guardiola's side to a first-leg deficit.
City started the match brightly but it was Madrid who had the first clear chance. Vinicius Jr. burst past Joao Cancelo and forced a good save from Ederson. The visitors continued to threaten on the break and Benzema came close with a header shortly before half-time.
City pressed forward in the second half but Madrid's defense stood firm. Benzema, however, proved to be the difference-maker. The French striker latched onto a cross from Federico Valverde and powered a header past Ederson in the 70th minute.
City threw everything at Madrid in the closing stages but failed to create any clear-cut chances. They will now need to overturn the deficit in the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu next week.
